Collection: Cape Cod Quarterboards Carved Signs
During the eighteenth century and years after, quarterboards often elaborately carved bearing a ship's name, were carried by sailing ships around the world. Nantucket's whaling fleet bore them in the South Pacific, international cargo vessels sailing through the island's tricky waters proclaimed their names on the double-ended boards. Some of the ships sank and their quarterboards were brought ashore as souvenirs and hung on buildings. there were collected, reproduced and eventually served as inspiration for a generation of more modern quarterboards that are now hung on newer homes across Nantucket and around the world.
